Software and composing books

Written by Dan on July 11th, 2009

It’s been difficult for me to post pictures along with my posts these past few weeks.  I recently upgraded the core software that powers this website.  In doing so, a little plugin that I was using to pull pictures from my Flickr feed broke.  Unfortunately the guy who wrote the plugin has been AWOL for a few months now.

It’s one of the tragedies and marvels of free, open-source software.  On the one hand, the author of a plug-in that I and a great many other people rely on just up and disappeared.  When the core software caused the plugin to misbehave, the guy was no where to be found.  However, after several weeks of frustration being vented by his clients on his website, one of them just took the code and fixed it himself.

Did he fix it totally?  Not…totally.  For some reason I’ve lost the photo effect that allows my flickr photos to hover over my website.  Clicking on the photos seems to just take you directly to the flickr page.   But it’s better than not working at all.

Speaking of photos, I think I’ve got to start putting together a photobook for 2008 if I have any chance of finishing one at all.

See, last year I “wrote” my first book.  It was something to celebrate the first year of my daughter’s life.  The problem is that I started just about four months prior to her first birthday, and worked on it until just after her birthday.  The darn thing ended up being 200 pages long.

The other day my wife turned to me and asked me when I was planning on doing another book.

Not if…when.

I understand the points she made.  In this day and age of digital photos, you end up with a ton of good pictures that rarely get printed out.  We have no photo albums, and hardly any pictures hanging on our walls.  So making a photobook allows us to have our “year book” without spending a fortune at the local Walgreens or two fortunes at Mpix.

It only comes at the cost of my time…and sometimes my sanity.

It’s been a few months since my daughter’s second birthday.  And my problems have been compounded by my acquisition of the D60.   If I have any chance of finishing anything before my daughter turns three, I probably need to get started now.

That’s ok.  It’s not like I have a life.
