I don’t know how this happened. But in the process of being neighborly (and avoiding some housework I had planned for the evening), I somehow ended up moving a stand-up freezer.
It all started innocently enough. A few weeks back, AM’s father had given us an old Radio Flyer riding toy that I think he had had when he was a kid. Overall the toy was in great shape. Basically I need to give the wood a little SWP (sandpaper, woodfiller and paint) and our daughter would be whizzing around the block in no time.
Of course, I said all that several weeks ago. My innate sense of laziness has had other things to say about my new found can-do attitude.
But little by little I’ve made some progress. And by progress I mean that I’ve run some sandpaper over the surface to take down the worst of the splinters. Tonight I had intended on spending a pleasant evening on the front porch applying some wood filler.
As I walked out however, I spied one of my neighbors tending her garden across the street. I looked down at the epoxy that I had yet to mix and then back across the street. ”Maybe she’ll have some extra vegetables she’d be willing to part with,” I thought. And so I abandoned my work to go say a quick hello.
As it turned out she had just picked some really excellent peas and cucumbers, more than her household could consume. And so I was laden down with a bag containing some of the excess capacity. I was about to go on home with produce in hand when I noticed her next door neighbors trundling what looked like a stand-up freezer towards their basement stairs.
“Need any help?” my friend and I asked.
“Why yes…yes we do.”
So tonight I found myself involved in the overly-complicated process of bringing a stand-up freezer down into the basement of a house with a very narrow staircase. I’m not entirely sure how that happened as I had intended just to pop over to shirk my own work. But there I was, gently scraping my fingers along the rough walls of the staircase with a sizable freezer looming over me.
I did get a cookie out of it, though, so…you know…there’s that.
Ah well, I’ve got two days before the girls come home. Plenty of time to finish the chores.

How’s it going? Are you enjoying the quiet, or missing the chaos?
