You’re on Thin Ice Warehouse 13

You too SyFy Channel.

So I’ve been watching Warehouse 13 on Hulu for the past few weeks.  When I first heard about the premise, I thought to myself: “Eureka (also a SyFy show) meets Indiana Jones meets The Odd Couple.”   As a brief synopsis for those of you who don’t follow my train of thought, the show centers around a pair of comically-mismatched Secret Service Agents (she’s the neat, tidy, and hopelessly uptight one with a tragic past!  He’s the groovy emotive sensitive one with childish sensibilities and a shoulder to cry on!) recruited to be hunters of a legion of powerful artifacts (located around the world apparently) for storage in the SUPER SECRET WAREHOUSE 13 (also known as “America’s Attic”).  Each week we watch as their eccentric mentor figure sends them out into the world in search of an artifact causing oddness in America all the while establishing a close relationship between each other, helping each other overcome the Sins of the Past.

It’s programming gold, I tells ya.

I should be enjoying this story more than I am.  After all, it shares so many elements with Eureka (another show that I really enjoy).

But I find myself dissatisfied.  Perhaps it’s the part where I find myself unwilling to believe that either character EVER belonged to the Secret Service before coming to Warehouse 13.  Perhaps it’s because they’re playing up the Odd Couple factor too much.  Or maybe not enough.

Or maybe it’s the part where the agents adjust so RAPIDLY to the oddness of the Warehouse and its mission.  One minute they’re Secret Service Agents, charged with protecting the Administration.  Order!  Discipline!  Crime fighting!

The next they’re fighting people possessed by residual malignant energy imprinted on a broach causing people to submit to their wildest impulses or whatever the artifact of the week is.  Eureka showed the Sheriff adapting and evolving and coping with living in a Top Secret town of Super Geniuses.  Warehouse 13 just kind of hinted at the transition in the first episode and then chose to ignore it.

In any case, I plan to keep watching the show for the time being.  This week’s show nearly caused me to chuck the whole series from my Hulu queue, but I’m going to give it one more shot.   Let’s see how it does.
