I’ve been DYING to read this site

Monday, August 31st, 2009

There have been stories, my friends, circulating around the web about this particular site.

Unfortunately, between being picked up by Time, Gizmodo, and Fark, you simply could NOT get to it.

But now it appears to be functional.

No doubt you’d heard of it by now from other sources, but ladies and gentlemen I give you:

I am not above being bribed

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

My daughter did not take a nap today.

It wasn’t for lack of trying, mind you. We put her in her room just shy of one o’clock. We didn’t let her out until around three o’clock. It’s just that during the intervening two hours she didn’t sleep. Instead she tore apart her room, played with her toys, and yelled down her catch phrases like: “I wake up!” and “Daddy? Daddy! I never take a coffee break right now!”

Ow.

Ow ow ow.

I just got up off our couch after watching a little TV for about an hour or so and every muscle in my arms, back, and legs started clamoring for attention, all at once.

Three hours, several dozen trips, and a bucket or two of sweat was all it took to shift over eight thousand pounds of wood pellets from my garage to my basement.

Well, those things and the MUCH appreciated help of my father-in-law.

But, with the exception of getting rid of five empty pallets, we’re all done.  Only one bag ripped, too!  Not bad.

Nothing moved today

It’s been one of those days where I’m not sure if it actually rained or if there was a localized suspension of natural laws causing large droplets of water to just kind of…hover mid-air.  You’d look at the ground and realized that it had rained earlier.  You’d look at the sky and think, “By golly, it’s going to rain any minute now”.  You’d feel water on your skin and think that it might just be raining now.  But there was no rain to see.  Nothing fell.  Nothing moved.

Including my pellets.   8600 pounds of pellets are taunting me from my garage.  None of bags joined their compatriots in my basement.

You might be wondering what that is.  If there’s one thing that Midwesterners seem to be quite stoic about, it’s the weather.  We talk about it all the time, but you’re as likely to find a Midwesterner strolling through the neighborhood on a rainy day as a sunny one.   (Snow seems to be the only change up that bothers the natives out here, but that only because they need to remember to use the emergency exits on the second floor of the houses.)  And I live here now.  I should be trying to be like them.  Indifferent to weather.  Incredible work-ethic. Salt of the earth.

Ok, this time it’s going a lot slower

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I mentioned in the last post that I recently had 10,000 pounds of wood pellets dropped in my driveway.   I’ve decided that it’s 10,000 pounds of pain and suffering really.  In the past two days I’ve moved forty bags.

At this rate I hope to finish by the end of the weekend.

This is my third iteration moving pellets into my basement as this will be my third winter in Wisconsin.  Each time I’ve learned a little something.

Limping along…and a little deaf

Monday, August 24th, 2009

This describes so much of my life right now.

First off, the Computer:  I have resurrected my computer for the short term.  The components are definitely…off.  I could spend time and effort and money bringing the computer fully back to life, but I’ve decided to go for the more expensive route and buy a new laptop.  Right now I’ve brought my machine back up enough to retrieve some files that were missing as well as to do the basic light browsing and various tasks that I need to do.  I’m also debating on adding another layer to my two prong backup system that I have now:  the offsite backup.  Contenders in the running are the well publicized Mozy and Carbonite.   I’m still looking at others.

So how is that book coming?

A little while back I mentioned how I started an effort to gather up all the pictures I’ve taken into a Blurb photobook.  It’s been ten days and I’ve made it halfway…

…through March.

I seem to have a problem with self-editing.   Every picture taken seems worthy of consideration.  Red eye?  No problem.  Subject off-center?  Well, a little bit of cropping might help.  Blurred beyond all recognition?  There might be an artistic element that will reveal itself if I stare hard enough.

I’ve gotten a little better though.   Just the other day I removed a picture or two from the collection.

I really need to get a move on on this book.

You wouldn’t like her when she’s angry

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

So my daughter is still awake.  I made a mistake tonight and left her music player within easy reach.  So she’s spent the last hour and a half singing quietly to herself along with her music.

Given that the monitor can pick up her voice more clearly than the music player, it’s actually quite hilarious.

So why don’t I just go up there and take the music player away?  Because I’d rather she just drift off to sleep rather than provoke a tirade.

Why?  Well, let me tell you a tale of triumph that gives you the reason why…
