As I may have mentioned, I’m in the process of trying to reconstruct my (computing) life on a new laptop after my previous computer had a Bad Moment.
Right now I’m having little chills run up and down my spine.
My previous backup solution may not have been as perfect as I had previously thought.
I may…I just may…have some important files…pictures…stuck on the two hard drives with issues.
I’m in the process of trying to figure that out, but it’s not a good feeling.
On the other hand, things are definitely pointing to some sort of online backup solution for this laptop. I’ve been evaluating a few options. I’ll let you know where I end up.

If the drives are working mechanically, I’ve had VERY good luck with the open-source file recovery program Foremost. Burn your favorite *buntu live cd, apt-get install foremost, and run it on the bad drive. You can even target specific file types, DOC, JPG, PDF, etc.
Good luck. I hate that sick feeling in the stomach when you realize the files are gone.
I may give that a shot. Thanks for the advice.
On a related note, I think that I’ve found most/all of the pictures at least.
