A weeks back, one of the RSS feeds I follow posted an article entitled “How to Make Kettle Corn in 3 Easy Steps“.
I could barely contain my excitement until that evening, when I shared the news of my discovery with my wife.
“If you make that abomination in my presence, I’m leaving you and taking the kid with me.”
My wife feels strongly about the proper preparation of popcorn.
Now it just so happens that my wife’s fall semester teaching schedule keeps her out of the house almost all evening on Wednesdays. In fact, as I type I’m not expecting her to be home for another hour or so at the earliest. That leaves me at home with my small child, who just so happens to adore the concept of popcorn and it’s many forms, including Kettle Corn. It’s the perfect time to give this recipe a whirl.
And so I did. The instructions are rather straight forward. Get a tall pot with a lid. Heat oil at the bottom of said pot until three sacrificial kernels pop. Melt sugar in pot. Add kernels. Shake constantly to prevent burning the sugar solution.
Easy. Peasy. (One Two Threesy)
It actually worked quite well. The popcorn popped in the sugared oil and became automatically coated. A little salt and a smidge of butter, and you’d be hard pressed to differentiate between the homemade stuff and the stuff at the parks and fairs and farmers’ market.
The only problem that I see (besides the clean up) is that I may have used a little too much oil. After my child and I shared a bit of popcorn while watching Singing in the Rain, I started to feel a bit…greasy.
Next time I’m going to try dialing back the oil just a tad. But that will have to wait until next week.
